Sterrato - Tra Nes e Geilo, Norvegia - 11 Giugno 1989

(UNPAVED ROAD - Between Nes and Geilo, Norway - June 11, 1989)

At the time there were also kilometers of unpaved road. In the beginning I thought I was lost but, luckily, the road was right. It wouldn't have been nice to get lost with a bicycle in a place where there was nobody and the few cottages were all closed. Given the abundance of lakes and rivers in the area, water wouldn't have been a problem but, pedalling all day, food used to disappear very, very quickly. By the way: I used to take water directly from the rivers without any filtering since I noticed some local people doing the same. Never had a problem but, remember, I am talking about 20 years ago!

It's extraordinary how much detail you remember from your travels, but I would imagine having these amazing photographs would stir up all kinds of memories. Did you keep a written journal?

Yes. I thought I had lost it while moving, but a few days ago I found it at the bottom of a drawer. Even with the written diary, though, I have a hard time placing many slides since roads, rivers, lakes and even towns look much alike most of the time. Good thing that every so often I shot some road signs. Google Earth helps a lot too, but not always.
